Essential Windows Vista Tips & Tricks

(1)  For Windows Vista Virus Protection I highly recommended the software application by Grisoft AVG Free Edition, which is a free anti virus program that works well on the new Windows Vista Operating System. Another user recommended option for complete Windows Vista virus protection is Avast Home Edition, which is also free for personal use. (2)  Scroll open windows with Windows Flip 3D. By pressing WINDOW+TAB on your keyboard you activate the Windows Flip 3D feature. Once the flip 3D window is open you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard or the scroll button on your mouse to easily scroll the 3D windows display.

(3)  Increase your hard drive performance with Windows Vista. First right click on the My Computer, then properties and find Device Manager. Now look for and expand the Disk Drives option form the list. Right click on your hard drive that is listed there and then select Properties. Find the Policies tab and Enable Advanced Performance. Finally select OK and close Device Manager. (note: A Battery Backup is recommended due to increased risk of data loss.)

(4)  With Windows Vista, you can add different system clocks to your desktop tray. First click the clock, and then on Date and Time Settings. Click the Additional Clocks tab menu. Here you can add one or two additional clocks to the desktop tray as well as select their custom time zone settings.

(5) Speed up Windows Vista start up time. First open your Start Menu and now find and open Windows Defender. Click on the Tools option menu found on the top menu bar and find and select Software Explorer. Now click on Show for All Users. From here you can select any application to either Remove or Disable it from starting with Windows Vista. By decreasing the load on windows vista you will see a noticeable difference in performance.

Install A Windows Vista Server

IIS 7.0 is a commonly used internet web server and is included with Windows Vista, however, when you first install Vista the IIS 7 Web Server is not installed or turned on by default. The new IIS7 is the merging of ASP.NET and IIS web technologies. ASP.NET is already implemented as an ISAPI extension for IIS, but in the new IIS7, that changes. Now, HTTP pipelines, handlers, modules, XML files and more are all natively built into the server platform.

Installing IIS 7.0 creates a Web site server to which users can connect via HTTP or HTTPS protocols. For increased security IIS7 is now almost completely modular. You can use the Windows Vista Web Server to develop and modify your websites and web applications development and web design.

Installing IIS 7 Vista Web Server & ASP.NET on Windows Vista

Installing the ASP.NET with IIS 7.0 on the Windows Vista will enable ASP.NET Web applications to run as local IIS Web sites from your computer. (Note: You must have administrative privileges to install and use IIS 7.0 Vista Web Server.)

To install the IIS Server with ASP.NET on a Windows Vista machine:

1. In Windows Vista, open the Control Panel and then select Programs and Features.

2. In the left hand pane, click on Turn Windows features on or off. The Windows Features dialog wizard box will open.

3. Now find and check off the Internet Information Services (IIS) check box. (note: This will enable the Windows Vista Web Server)
   

4. Expand the Web Management Tools area, double click IIS 6 Management Compatibility, and then select the IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibility check box.

5. Expand World Wide Web Services and click Application Development Features and then select the ASP.NET check box, and .NET Extensibility, as well as any other features that you may need enabled on your Vista server.
   
   (note: When you create a local IIS Web site, the pages and folders for your site are stored in a folder under the default IIS folder for Web sites, which is located at LocalDrive C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\)

   To make sure the  IIS 7.0 Web server in Windows Vista is running & to manage it later:

    

6. In Windows Vista, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

7. In the Computer Management dialog box, select Services and Applications.

8. Expand Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, and click the name of your Web server (note: Your computer's name), and then click Web Sites.

9. Right-click Default Web Site to display a list of options available, and then click Start to enable your default Web site if it is already not.

10.  Open an internet browser and type http://localhost/ you will see that your Vista web server is indeed up and running. (note: If something went wrong you will receive a no server found message and you should repeat the steps above.)

Create a New Partition in Windows Vista

Windows Vista makes it very simple to create a second partition on your hard drive with easy to use and free built in tools.

First you will need to free up some space in the hard drive that you would like the partition to be on. If you feel unsure about how to do this, please refer to my earlier post that covers how to free up space on a hard drive without data loss in Windows Vista.

Lets create a partition with Windows Vista. Right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage than Disk Management.

Find the drive that you have freed up some space on and right click on the free space and select New Simple Volume.

In the next wizard box choose the size of the partition. Set it to match the amount of space that you have free or less and than click next.

Now select the Drive Letter that you would like the new partition to be called and than next.

Format your partition as an NTFS file system and select quick format. Here you can also give it it a unique Volume Label if you want than select next.

The partition is formatted and all that left to do is to click finish.

You now have a newly created NTFS Logical partition ready for use. Great Job!

Setting web page margin

Web pages look a lot nicer with a larger margin. You can set the left and right margins with the "margin-left" and "margin-right" properties. For example:

<style type="text/css">
body { margin-left: 10%; margin-right: 10%; }
</style> 

This sets both margins to 10% of the window width, and the margins will also scale when you resize your browser window.

Left and right indent space

To make headings a little more distinctive, you can make them start within the margin that is set for the web page body. For example:

<style type="text/css">
body { margin-left: 10%; margin-right: 10%; }
h1 { margin-left: -8%;}
h2,h3,h4,h5,h6 { margin-left: -4%; }
</style> 

This example has three CSS style rules. One for the body, one for h1 and one for the rest of the headings (h2, h3, h4, h5 and h6). The margins for the headings add to the margins set for the body. A negative value is used when you need to move the start of the heading to the left of the margin set for the body.

The above examples of particular style rules can be placed within a style element in the web page's head or in a seperate linked style sheet.

Web Safe Fonts List

A list of websafe fonts that I use in web design web development projects. Websafe or "web safe", safe for the web fonts are fonts that are common among all versions of Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is likely that your preferred font won't be available on all users computers. To get around this, you are allowed to list several backup fonts in preference order.

The web safe font names below are listed with the font-family which is in CSS format. The first font listed is the primary choice. It is also common for each font to come with a Generic Font Family CSS fallback font, such as serif or sans-serif, just in case the primary font is not found.
